This week, CY:ONS had the privilege of stepping onto the global stage at Formnext 2024 in Frankfurt, a place where innovation meets action in the world of additive manufacturing. Our Chief Product Developer, Tim Grootjans, shared how 3D printing is reshaping how we design and create e-bikes, leaving us inspired and motivated to dream even bigger.

Exploring the Possibilities

Tim introduced the audience to our process at CY:ONS, showing how we use additive manufacturing as a tool in our e-bike design process. Here are some key takeaways:

  • Prototyping, Simplified: Imagine testing out a new design idea in days, not months. 3D printing helps us bridge the gap between concept and reality faster than ever.

  • Rider-Centric Design: With 3D printing, we can craft components specifically for each rider, delivering a truly customized experience.

  • Breaking Free from Limits: Traditional manufacturing imposes constraints. Additive manufacturing opens the door to creative freedom, letting us design beyond the imaginable.

Currently, the production of e-bikes often involves complex global supply chains, shipping components across continents, and managing logistical challenges that can delay delivery and inflate costs. Or, as Tim put it:

"Imagine a world where urban e-bikes are printed locally, cutting down on supply chain challenges while offering unparalleled customization."

Tim’s vision flips the traditional supply chain model on its head. By leveraging the power of additive manufacturing, e-bikes could be produced locally, in smaller, agile facilities closer to where they’re needed.

The Future of 3D Printing in E-Bike Design

Formnext was also an opportunity to think about where this technology can take us. Here’s how we see the future:

  1. Local Production: E-bikes printed closer to the customer mean faster delivery, better personalization, and a reduced carbon footprint.

  2. Sustainability at Scale: 3D printing already minimizes waste, but as materials improve, we’ll see even more sustainable solutions emerge.

  3. Collaborative Innovation: Imagine AI, data-driven design, and additive manufacturing working together to produce smarter, stronger, and more efficient bikes. The possibilities are endless.

Reflections from Formnext

Walking through the halls of Formnext, surrounded by cutting-edge materials and technologies, was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Every conversation and demonstration fueled our passion for staying at the forefront of this fast-paced industry.

But the real highlight? Hearing directly from others in the field; designers, manufacturers, and dreamers, about how additive manufacturing is changing their industries too.

At CY:ONS, we believe in the power of innovation to create a better future for urban mobility. If you share our passion for innovation, let’s connect!
